What it takes to be a volunteer at Tara's Chance:

  • Complete all volunteer forms through docusign below. Complete the introduction online course through google classroom once you receive the invitation. Schedule your orientation and pay $40 to confirm your place, process your application, a t-shirt, and a background check.

  •  Attend our 1.5 hour orientation training course which will teach you horse safety, horse basics, program operations, and volunteering information. You will receive a qualification book at orientation for you to begin hands on training.

  • Complete side walker one online course through google classroom and start observing riding lessons and side walking in the program.

  • After being qualified as a side walker one, you can pursue your passion at Tara's Chance through our volunteer pathways. You can continue side walker qualifications to become advanced, start to work towards horse leader qualifications, or even instructor qualifications.

VOLUNTEERING REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 15 years old

  • Program volunteers must be physically fit

    • Volunteering in equine assisted therapy sessions involves moderate physical activity. Make sure you are comfortable with the physicality of the role you have selected, as you will be walking and doing some jogging in a sand arena and on your feet for up to two hours. Volunteers must be able to handle a dusty environment and those working with horses must be able to move quickly and strong enough to control large animals. Please Note: No prior horse experience is necessary, but very helpful! If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that is less physically demanding, volunteering in the office or mucking stalls is a great alternative!
