What it takes to be a volunteer at Tara's Chance:

  • Complete the form below on this page to express your interest and provide us with your availability.

  • Attend an Open House and see first hand what our program is like! Open House's will be taking place every 1st Saturday of the month. It is highly recommended to attend Open House prior to Orientation to see what we do as Orientation does not take place during regular program hours. However, if you are unable to attend an Open House, please RSVP for our next available Orientation (please find on the open house tab). â€‹â€‹

  •  Attend our 2 hour orientation/introduction training course which will teach you horse safety, horse basics, program operations, and volunteering expectations. At orientation you must also:

    • Pay $40 for your t-shirt and background check

    • Fill out Liability form (if not filled out at an Open House)

    • Get set up on Slack for communication â€‹

  • Once fees are paid and liability form is signed as well as completing the background check, you will be scheduled to begin training and regular volunteering. You will receive your t-shirt on your first day.

  • All volunteers will begin training for Side-Walker 1 as you begin, from there you will be able to pursue any volunteer path you wish to take based on your interests!

VOLUNTEERING REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 15 years old for outside of the arena work (stall management/ranch management, events)

  • Must be at least 16 years old for in arena work (side-walking and horse-leading)

  • Program volunteers must be physically fit

    • Volunteering in equine assisted therapy sessions involves moderate physical activity. Make sure you are comfortable with the physicality of the role you have selected, as you will be walking and doing some light jogging in a sand arena and be on your feet for up to two hours. Volunteers must be able to handle a dusty environment and those working with horses must be able to move quickly and strong enough to control large animals. Please Note: No prior horse experience is necessary, but very helpful! If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that is less physically demanding, volunteering for events/photography or mucking stalls is a great alternative!
